I hate to see such fantastic talent grind itself into this kind of depression. I wish I had all the connections and strings to pull that would get him his dream job, so he'd stop whining and be happy and productive. I don't even have a concrete dream (yay for oxymorons) to chase; just some stuff I'd like to do maybe, too many to actually pursue, and some money. He deserves to succeed.

HBO Rome has driven me to further piracy. I knew I wanted to see it when it came up in Latin last year and Dr. Wallace discussed its vagaries with us. Then I was linked to Fandomtalk where they have recaps of all the episodes, and now I have to see them. SPQR! Next year is going to be fun. Brian, the darling of Dr. Wallace's last ever advanced Latin course, will be living with Stephan, who wants to learn Latin and is an even better BSer, and Ben, who is not only an amusing presence of guerilla intelligence who keeps Stephan humble, but an amazing pianist (MY pianist! hah!). We'll all have to watch Rome together. Not that it's in Latin, but I'm positive it will be eminently mockable, and there's nothing like the powerhouse of Brian, Stephan, Ben and me for a great mockfest. We found that out in last semester's History class. We're dangerous in combination.

My chainmail shirt requires a little more width to the sleeves before I can link the back with the front and finish it; I'm more inclined to small works at the moment, but I can't find the wirecutters of an appropriate size for 20-gauge, 4mm rings. I keep making arani with beads instead of chain, because I can't cut rings without those wirecutters.

Well, I could draw something, since practicing seems to be the last thing I am currently suited for. I haven't advanced any of my sketchbooks far enough to designate one as the Next Main Sketchbook to carry around, yet. Or I could call the software companies of my uncooperative copies of Sibelius and Photoshop, and rejoice in the return of my fully functional computer. I have a wacom, so why don't I use it? Because I hate the telephone. Hm. Manual art it is.

It finally got bright outside, so I rather involuntarily lay down next to the pool and stared at it for awhile. Who permitted swamp life to impersonate precious minerals? It looks like a gem and jewelry show in there. There's emerald, turquoise, peridot, and dichroic glass dragonflies with tiny little gold-wire inlay. The hydrilla is quite exquisitely carved jade and aventurine on jasper bases, with iolite and amethyst flowers every so often. The tiny water striders could be 24ct gold stud earrings. Even the minnows and mosquitofish, from the right angle, look like translucent rutilated quartz or fancy agate, with gold bead eyes and silver inlay for a skeleton. The water itself is, improbably, exactly the color of a particularly dark Chinese jade.

It just makes all art kind of futile, you know?
