It finally got bright outside, so I rather involuntarily lay down next to the pool and stared at it for awhile. Who permitted swamp life to impersonate precious minerals? It looks like a gem and jewelry show in there. There's emerald, turquoise, peridot, and dichroic glass dragonflies with tiny little gold-wire inlay. The hydrilla is quite exquisitely carved jade and aventurine on jasper bases, with iolite and amethyst flowers every so often. The tiny water striders could be 24ct gold stud earrings. Even the minnows and mosquitofish, from the right angle, look like translucent rutilated quartz or fancy agate, with gold bead eyes and silver inlay for a skeleton. The water itself is, improbably, exactly the color of a particularly dark Chinese jade.

It just makes all art kind of futile, you know?
