Yesterday's morning rehearsal with the (A)Couscous ensemble concentrated on the Prayer of Thanks spiral round that Andrew wrote; we spent perhaps a straight hour figuring out, writing down, solfeging, and counting (it's in 7+5+7) its chord progression, singing all the while. We did eventually get to the actual melody of the round, but the progression drone feels like such an accomplishment, that was just icing. And then we kicked some more Vincentino. The electricity went out about halfway through, which means that day we never got to listen to the autotuned 31EDO recording for reference, and we STILL got it pretty darn good. Marji's playing the soprano part on the violin (I may go back and join her when we have Jacob consistently, but I was helping Elizabeth on alto while he was rehearsing with the laptop band), Dan, Mike, and Andrew on Tenor, and Steven's playing the bass party spectacularly reliably on the trombone (also it is beautiful). I love that piece.

Since the power was out, we couldn't start making dinner at our accustomed and assigned time (water, gas, fridge and fans all disappear without electricity too), so we sort of futzed around till it became evident we'd have to get our food somewhere else. Oh, and a pair of former volunteers stopped by on their way through and let us play with their newly acquired sugar glider, who was adorable. Roxanne (the kitchen manager, my age) had the presence of mind to remember that there was a phone in Tyler (cute architect)'s office that had a cord, so she used it to call restaurants in nearby towns to see if they were open/had power.

We ended up going to Marlinton, a 30-minute drive, to a diner called Dorie's, where I did not steal Mike's food (our adjoining tables were served by separate waitresses, for extra precautions). A bacon cheeseburger and a piece of pie made a pleasantly off-task night even more special. Our end of the table played various question games, since Jacob had taught the inhabitants of the van a came called Contact (I came in Roxanne's care with her and Mike, and we talked about cows, but I picked it up quick). I taught them Botticelli (which I'd learned from Stephan when we had two hours to kill at Disney Hall before a Chanticleer concert), and Nick succeeded twice in winning, once by stumping the entire table (with Dr. Zhivago) and once by guessing the answer almost immediately.

Andrew and I rode back in Steven's car and played all the way home, and then the Laptop Party (not to be confused with the laptop band, which Joey informs me [possibly spontaneously and unofficially, but I like it, so I'm posting it] is called Glorch for Gesundheit Laptop Orchestra). Mike and Doug and Nick and Jacob and I (and some other people) hung loosely, till Jacob's laptop meeting was initiated (and then I read a book). But Jacob had determined several days earlier that he wanted his hair cut, and last night he actually found a hair cuttation implement (it looks just like the buzzers we used for the dogs). So he asked who cut hair, and I figured my experience with that kind of implement probably counted for something. Thus, Jacob is now buzzed, and I was covered in Jacobhair.

This morning's meeting we continued with the JI interval practice we'd started awhile ago, and then figured out what needed to be rehearsed before tomorrow night's concert. Because tonight TOBY TWINING is coming to give a presentation. (Jacob and I gave ourselves a moment to quietly freak out and flail and jump a little bit this morning).

But now it is time to rehearse!
