Another excellent concert, for a day much more relaxed than last night's excitement. The posse arrived at the apartment around 10 and we set off for Whole Foods to get a picnic for the day out. I'd never been to the Hatch Shell, so the gorgeous greenery of the Esplanade was a surprise. The five of us strolled leisurely up to the outside rail in time to set down our blanket and roll out some fruit and trail mix before the local openers, the Jackson Wetherbee Band. I liked them better than the first band billed on the lineup, Marcy Playground. Since I pretty much ignored the radio in the 90's, I hadn't heard of any of the bands playing the show besides Crash Kings, and none of their songs made much of an impression on me.

We'd picked a spot outside the main field, behind the VIP rows stage right. There was a sweet little lady in a lawn chair protecting the blanket setups of her girls along the fence, but when it came time for our boys' set, she invited us to move up and she'd move sideways since her girls weren't there and we were clearly fanatics. So we stood right against the fence (in fact, I stood on it) when the boys were announced, and though the view was obstructed slightly by the jumbotron trusses, we preferred our spot to the middle front for sound reasons as well as overpopulation.

I love it when they open with 1985. It's so full of arrival. You Got Me had some technical difficulties, as the clav failed to sound at all for the entire solo section, and there was some frantic waving and pointing and mouthing of things that were too loud. I hope the sound guys get their act together. Mike stalled for awhile between songs so Tony could talk to them, and everything was recovered perfectly for a really jammin' 14 Arms. The rest of the list goes like this: It's Only Wednesday, Come Away, Raincoat, Saving Grace, Carry On, Mountain Man; it was awesome to hear about 10,000 people do the lick in that last one. I stood on the bottom rung of the rail and jammed pretty hard (I got some funny looks, but I got some solidarity too; there was a guy in a red shirt in the middle section about 50 feet away who knew the words to everything, even Carry On, who saw me rocking out and smiled).

We decided that since we had no huge investment in seeing any of the other bands at the festival, we'd withdraw from our excellent spot and set up somewhere else to hang for the rest of the day. However, we did want to stop by the merch tent back in the boonies on the other side of the Shell, because the band said they'd be there. I'd already got my pair of new shirts when we went exploring earlier, so we just sort of hung around talking next to the crossroads where the booth was, waiting for the really rather frightening crowd and line for autographs to dissipate a little before we tried to say hi. I'm pretty sure Jason saw us hanging around and smiled back when I smiled at him, but all three of them were really under the gun to sign stuff for ages.

Jo's posse went to sit under a tree and play cards while we waited for the line to diminish, but came back whenwe who could see all three boys under the tent noticed that they were up and leaving before the last trickle of fans dissipated. So we caught up with them a little way, and Jason said hi and gave me a hug and was glad we made it (I told him I'd meant to say hi the night before, but the club closed and kicked us out). Tony said hi, too, and was also glad to see us (another big smile, which I'm not used to seeing on him), and Mike waved back and smiled at Julie when she waved at him. They had to go do a meet&greet thing, so I told them go do their thing and we'd see them tomorrow, at the least (they thought they might come back to the merch tent).

We spent the rest of the concert chilling on the blanket next to the merch tent, and though the boys didn't make a second appearance, we had a lovely time picnicking and talking, trading watches over the spot and our stuff while some of us went exploring. Near the end of the last band's set (I believe Collective Soul was their name), we decided to avoid the rush for the T after the show (our decision to leave then might also have been influenced by Jo's report of seeing the boys by the vehicles on her trip to the bathroom).

The trip back apparently included a Jason sighting, though I was never looking the right direction, but it was enough anyway because we knew we'd be right up with them the next day.

I got a couple videos, but the angle I had was not nearly as good as Jo's, and she got more, so I'll link hers when she posts instead of uploading mine. I was busy rocking out. I got a couple pictures with Tony's second red-plaid, the one he wore in West Chester that we were concerned might have had a laundry mishap, but again, I'm sure Jo's are better. Stay tuned for media updates re: today, and also for the recap of tomorrow's show. Looking forward to it so hard.

Meanwhile, when I got home to Brent (and his sister, who's here to see his graduation tomorrow), I noticed a package on my chair with Custard as the return address. Double extra Crash Kings bonus awesome day! My contest swag arrived! So Julie and I are watching the Warren Miller DVDs, which are scary and full of amazing ski tricks and frightening wipeouts. I've got another copy of the CD, this one signed, and, naturally, another CKs shirt, one of the same ones I picked up today at Earthfest. I don't regret it, though, cause I tend to alter them (lest you forget, I'll mention that Jason commented on the one I wore today again even though he'd seen it in Austin, and asked if it was the same one. I told him I wore the new one yesterday). Now I have new ones to awesomeify! Maybe I'll get one done by tomorrow! As well as the few corrections Tony gave me last night, printed and ready to give him!

"Double extra Crash Kings bonus awesome day!" best line ever. =]
I haven't even been home long enough to watch those videos! Ugh! But I promise they'll be sent to you as soon as I hunt for some solid internet.

Thanks again for showing me my new favorite grocery store, as I'm sure I'll be there ALL THE TIME when I'm in town. =D
