Well! Just back from a rather interesting game of D&D. Summary (although it would have been great if we had brought a tape recorder, John was scared I'd eat it again): We woke up facedown on the banks of a river with a dryad watching over us, and she gave us a job to go kill goblins who were cutting down her trees and then find and kill whatever it was that got us facedown unconscious anyway, that she drove off with spells to save us. We set off through the forest, killing a couple kobolds on the way, and eventually reach a cave, which we enter cautiously after quarreling over whether or not JR will get our (Alex's and my) crossbows so he can roll in, make a double shot at the fighting we hear going on in the distance, and refusing. There are three paths. We start with the middle one, in which we encounter a troll (oh, boy). We are levels 2, 2 and 1. The troll has 164 HP. Alex lights a wooden wall support pillar on fire while JR and I distract the troll, and then we run like the wind when that section of the passage collapses on the troll. Back at the three-tine fork in the cave, we decided (duh) to listen for the fight that we heard on entering the cave. We can't tell where it's coming from, and get into a quarrel about whether to go down the right passage (which DM has let slip has a biiig surprise waiting, JR wanted to go see anyway), or the left, from which the echoes seem to be coming. He's about to set off right on his own when I finally concede and give him my crossbow so he'll come with us (we shouldn't split up). In the left passage we, moving silently, come upon a fight between a small group of kobolds and goblins. We wait a little and then pick off the goblins with ranged attack, and then comes the highlight of the game: we convince the kobolds that JR is a god, by way of Alex's ventriloquism, my light spell and translation skills (I was the only one who spoke their language), and JR's quick thinking and really loud voice. They take us to their leader, whom we tie, willing, to a chair and charm (under the pretext of a holy blessing ceremony). We sleep through the night and regain our spells, and in the morning, we talk to them. They are miners and have "shinies" which they make into toys. They bring us a couple, and we see that it's a metal, but we don't know what. We demand sharp pointy things and they say the best sharp pointy thing got stolen by a huge slimy slug, which disappeared with it through the wall. We follow the slime to its lair, taking a band of fighters kobolds with us, and leaving them outside it under my eye. Alex and JR talk to the slug by casting comprehend languages on it, and then it gives them an amulet so they can understand it too. The kobolds I had been watching (Alex called me in after a little) were worried about us and came in, and got slaughtered by the slug. It turns out to be a lawful good slug who wishes it were a paladin, and calls me in and gives us all a bunch of cool stuff because it hates kobolds and is amused when we tell it about our deception. JR ends up offending it, though, and we leave it on bad terms (except for me, because I promise to give the sword it gave us to a paladin JR said we knew who is coincidentally John's character). We get back to the kobold camp, and they're pretty fed up with JR's tyranny, and demand proof of his godhood. We cast light and enlarge on him, and he squashes a couple sick kobolds they bring to him for healing, but they don't buy it a JR has to pick me and Alex up and run. Back at the fork, we take the right passage this time. We sneak up on and kill three scout party kobolds, and then we come upon the avatar of the Great God of Evil, the Dark Hand, Bane. Oh, shoot. somehow we talk him into accepting us as pious followers (we're all neutral alignment), and mention this prissy slug who had been badmouthing him and he gets enraged and goes off to slaughter it. We follow, and enjoy spectating. The slug is powerful, but eventually ends up dead, we think at the time, on the floor. After and interlude of friendly chat with Bane, we are astonished to see the Greater God Tyr come down and revive his champion, the slug. Bane is massacred, and Tyr forgives us and lets us go with his blessing. Alex has to leave, so DM John plays him as an NPC. We then go back up the passage and meet another adventurer who challenges JR to a duel. He gets knocked into a mysterious sphere of darkness after being disarmed, but comes out with a new sword he managed to grab, and wins. At this point, John has to leave, and, as I'm riding home with him, I go, too. Whee. We must do this more often.
