Of course I stayed up too late talking to Brent. And Stepan, who will be moving out (the reason I can move in) and his girlfriend Yasmin, who is also awesome. They had an impromptu improv session in Stepan's room, which was shockingly good of course. And we talked and played on Youtube this morning.
I am beginning to perceive the conservatory atmosphere; I, having gone to a middle-of-the-road music school (voice-wise, anyway) in the middle of a transition period where we were not pushed very hard, and having been pretty much done for a year, am woefully intimidated. In addition to having the practice ethic of a goldfish with ADHD, I have not improvised seriously for four years, and have largely forgotten how. Last night in conversation with Yasmin, who is also in the CI department, I find that the teachers are very much geared towards jazz, of which I have nearly no experience. There are exceptions, and hopefully I can carve out a vocal niche among the instrumentalists that isn't a standard-singing jazz chanteuse; my ideal, of course, would be either multitracking myself (which is a different kind of improv which becomes more and more structured the more tracks you have) or a McFerrin-esque a cappella improv ensemble. For I am a singer, much as I hate to box myself thus, and small ensembles are what I am best at.
Hopefully orientation will lift some of the brooding. The limitations of being in a town where you hardly know anyone yet are also weighing heavily.
