It's been one of those action-packed couples of days. I teched for the opera gala, which was a bit stressful (running surtitles requires a certain amount of attention, skill, and confidence). And then they let the staff eat at the fancy gala for the donors who bought $350 tickets to the event. There was a salmon roll salad and the best steak I've ever had and sweet-potato cheese cream dish and a tomato with spinach and cheese in it and it was all in little towers just like gourmet food is supposed to be, and there was a different wine with each course (I gave mine to Dan), and it was unbelievably fancy. Debbie told me the day before to bring a cocktail dress to eat in, so mama and I spent lunch trying to find something appropriate (they had to tell me what a cocktail dress was, first). It was eminently fancy, and so was I (the grad student girls even attacked me with makeup), and Tom Conroy played jazz piano when Ross wasn't playing lounge singer with Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire. Guy happened to be there, in an irresistibly hot suit, which was highly entertaining.
I left as soon as I could after dessert, since I'd told Stephan and Charlie I'd be done around 9:30 and it was 10:15 when the meal was over. I walked all the way to Martel in heels, just to see if I could (I don't recommend the experience, but I made it). I was in a hurry, so there'd been no time to change, so I knocked on Charlie's door in a cocktail dress, heels, makeup, and long hair. Stephan did a double-take. I'd missed the first half of the Act I, but I saw the rest of the Milan production of Notre Dame de Paris, a French-Canadian musical that bears a striking resemblance to Cirque du Soleil and develops themes exclusively by modulation. It was a blast watching Charlie's favorite musical with him (Charlie's my superstar), and Jess Roper happened to be there, which was also quite interesting.
Stephan and I left around 1 in the morning and went back to his house and listened to the new Ring recording he doesn't have that my mom had bought that day. And I fell asleep. Because I hadn't slept much lately.
This morning we went to Stargate Yule. I had managed to convince Stephan to come with me, and it was a success. He was intrigued by the Society and its hierarchy, especially Artisanship and Bardic, and found the overwhelmingly accepting dorkitude endearing. He was impressed byt eh Arts and Sciences presentations (there were some stupendous woodcuts, composite bows, and chainmail). Also, there was some dancing. We joined. It reminded me of learning the English country dances with Alan at my first Western Wind workshop. I'll post some pictures later, but I was relieved he had fun, because I'd thought he might be bored. He wasn't.
Now he's off having dinner with Katie, and I am off to have dinner with Dan and make Christmas cookies.
