Elliot Cole, people. Watch out for this composer. Rehearsing his madrigal today for the second time has only confirmed my opinion; in a completely different vein from Dottore Barton, but just as awesome.

Tom was in rare form today, both in coaching and in chorale. We got through the Bach less tediously and then worked on the Argento (Gloria from Masque of Angels, very cool, check it out) and Dorati (Benedictus), both of which are beautiful to make up for so much Bach.

Absconding to Stephan's afterwards to finish piles of work, I couldn't have anticipated as unheardof an occurrence as an episode of House with Bryan holding still to watch all of it, even asking to pause it for bathroom breaks. Stephan agrees, this House ep shows we're on the upswing.

There was a little of a blip trying to get downtown to see the dress of Aida, but we made it.

Oh, Aida. I kind of wish I hadn't just read Stephan's Verdi/Wagner term paper, because it certainly colored my perceptions. We get free tickets to the dress rehearsals of HGO operas, and dress is usually not quite as transporting an event as a real show, though there are moments, of course. But I was thinking the whole time about how the cartoon set contrasted with the elaborate, ornate, and over-the-top costumes to undermine the sobriety, perhaps to lessen its inherent racism by parody... It was hard to get into it with musicological questions churning in my mind. Amneris certainly got my attention, though. One of those real mezzos, who doesn't have to woof and pretend she's a mezzo, cutting through the slightly overloud orchestra with grace and ease, even in her lower middle range, the bane of women's voices.

I TOLD my mom that was you in the red shirt in the balcony! I knew it was you, but she thought it wasn't. I was gonna call you to prove it, but there was no reception.
