Surreal, bizarre, and frightening; this is maybe the fourth Rice student to die this year, and he was much closer to my sphere of acquaintances. His brother is a major presence in campus theater and SpoCo. Goes without saying, a person dies on the morning of BeerBike, it's canceled. Not that I was a fan, but Dan...

I slept 12 hours, got up and bantered, played DragonFable, and was about to start the evil VW paper when I checked my email and found out. So strange.

It might be more than four, even, if you count the Jones alumnus who died back in October.

I was supposed to chug for Jones today as a last-minute replacement for someone. I'm just hoping they'll reschedule rather than cancel altogether, maybe with a less crazy atmosphere out of respect. We just put in so much work that I'd hate to see it fade away.

They're not saying on the listserv I found out from, but Stephan says the boy had a severe respiratory problem that occasionally made him stop breathing, and it probably happened. They found him unconscious in his room and took him to the hospital, and he was pronounced dead at 8:35. Bryan heard rumors on campus, when he went to the library, about alcohol or drugs, but I am skeptical.
