Oops. There went any semblance of good mood. Not that closing night didn't go well. Kid was very huggy backstage, people were companionable about I Kesh Ko, mama came and brought me flowers. I thought about going to the cast party, but decided I'd die if I had another night of sleep deprivation, plus Dan wasn't going. He called and asked me to sleep at his house in case he has to go to the ER. My phone had been dead all day, so I only got the message once I got to Stephan's house, and he said it was okay when I called him back.

Stephan just told me what happened at the Players coordinators' meeting he left Chemistry's lecture at MFAH early to go to. His day has not gone well. He slept through LPAP, went late to Chemistry and decided not to go at all, in order to get to his coordinator meeting on time. In doing so, he accidentally stood his piano teacher up for a lesson that had been rescheduled four times.

In the meeting, it was decided the Rice Players will be drastically reduced and phased out within the next three years, due to the burgeoning importance of the Theater major at Rice and the absurdity of the University-funded club's productions outshining the new official department's efforts in every way. The Players own the props, costume, and shop equipment and have free rein in Hamman Hall; that's embarrassing for the department, so too bad that it was an entirely student-run club and no faculty member had authority over its activities.

So, it's getting sad over here. I guess JCS will have to be at Brown. Not that we couldn't pull it off spectacularly on a shoestring anyway; we don't really need the resources the Players had, but it would have been nice.

...you *are* kidding me. So, what, the costume closet, prop room, and shop will be auctioned off to the various college theatres, or just repossessed wholesale by the department?

Jesus God. I've never had a worse time at Rice than I did with the Rice Players, and even *I* think that's a terrible idea.

The way I hear it, the most plausible outcome is that they'll be auctioned off to the department or burned.
