After what feels like a month incommunicado but I guess was only a week and a half, I will say that my holiday has so far been superb, with much eating of candy, opening of presents, playing of cards, and love of relatives. Gail's family, Amy's family (minus Heather and Marissa), Andy, David, Mama, Grandjo and I were there for Christmas, with the Glasers (minus Kevin and Paul, whose wives are both too pregnant to travel) arriving the day after.
I volunteered to keep Hank company driving Allen back to Missouri on the 27th, and it was long but quite tolerbale, especially since there was much mutual hair-playing on the way, and Allen's just as good at it as Grant. We put him at his house, met his girlfriend, and went to crash at Lisa's house (nobody was there, since Lisa had just left Lake Jackson to go in the opposite direction, McAllen). Lo! The morning after we crashed at Lisa's house post 13 hours of driving, Kevin came with his son Zavien and made us breakfast. That kid is a neat kid, and I don't like kids. I like him, though.
On the way back it was storming too hard for Hank to go all the way in one night, so I suggested we crash at Jill's rather than find a motel. He was reluctant, but I was hoping very quietly and very intensely that he would acquiesce and all the logistics would work out, because I don't see Jill or her kids very often and they didn't come to Christmas. I made several calls asking for directions to Jill's house, and got them, and was guided down into the Dallas area, and both Grant and Seth were home! We stayed up way later than advisable talking, and I drifted off in Seth's bed next to him. Hank woke me up in the morning to take a shower and we made it the rest of the way home, sans night-vision, thunderstorm and driving winds.
We stopped at Heather's house to hang out with her, her husband Jorge and their son Alexandro (spelling sic), Marissa, her husband Chris, and their twins Sebastian and Vincent, and have dinner and watch incredibly, incalculably dumb movies on the Sci Fi network. And then Amy drove me home, where I am now, and where, this morning, I recieved as a late Christmas, an inversion table! Everyone has to come over and try it, since I put it together this afternoon and it is very, very cool.
So I've seen more people this holiday than I expected to, and may even go back to Dallas for a bit because one night with Grant and Seth isn't near enough in two years. Tonight, though, we're driving back to Lake Jackson for New Year's. More pie and cards are in order.
