Now that I've submitted it, I will write the big long procrastinatory entry.

I was going to finish it the night before yesterday, but I stayed up reading instead and woke up past noon, expecting Andrew to arrive any minute (until I got his message saying he'd be later than he expected). He fixed the bridge on my cello (I don't know how it came off, but it was very disturbing and uncomfortable to see it that way, not to mention unplayable), ate some cookies, and gave me tremendous and amazing solstice presents:

Heaney's verse translation of Beowulf!
A big huge knife with a stained wood handle!

It took me awhile to get over that. I carried the knife around for quite a bit. But then it was time to go kidnap Reggie. We ended up going the longest possible way that didn't include actually going the exact opposite direction from our destination, but we saw an amazing construction/demolition site on Studemont after the cemetary, right before Allen parkway, that we should have parties in. It was like a Stonehenge constructed from concrete and rebar, with multifarious levels of decaying palatial parking garage around it. And cranes in the yard.

Kidnapping Reggie involved eating lots of veggie burgers and Thai pizza, but I'm not going to complain. We finally got past the magic disappearing street and back to my neighborhood, where we couldn't decide what to do for an hour, but ended up going to Katz's for food and cheesecake. And then.

We sort of equal-opportunity invaded the Rice campus in search of reverberant acoustics. Our first meander yielded the dressing rooms in Hamman Hall, where we burbled, chanted, and whispered in the near-pitch-black, rather mystical atmosphere that descends when you shut the door to the spiral staircase. I got some pretty good overtones, and they got some pretty good under ones.

Then we schlepped off to the Rice Chapel, inside which I'd never been, to play with the focus point of the round wall behind the altar and take blasphemous pictures on it (Andrew makes a good sacrifice, with his Jesus hair). We made several other explorations all over campus, from the Herring stairwells to the Shepherd lobby to the Wiess quad, where Andrew fell off the trampoline in a most spectacular but nonfatal manner, before we went back and took Reggie home and Andrew went away.

Then Dan wanted to hang out, since he was leaving the next day. So we went to Chapultepec with Mike Accinno, a former studiomate, where they got pretty drunk. We played with the jukebox and ignored the even drunker jerks at the next table, and I saw several PVA alums I hadn't seen in ages, which was nice, and I drove Dan home with Mike in the back, and we somehow acquired Burfy on the way.

I then sequestered myself in the closet to write the evil paper of doom while they watched Not Another Gay Movie. And woke up and wrote some more. Rather badly, I must admit. But it's over now, and Dan and I watched An American In Paris, and we're going to go mess with books to return and sell back and food to eat and other exciting members of the process we call life.

Okay. As tomorrow is the solstice, we should do something. I may be able to get a hold of Rainey also, and we should kidnap Reggie if at all possible. I will call with plans sometime, probably after noon.

Excellence itself. I may be required to abscond off to Lake Jackson in the evening, so I hope the plans will be as early as possible.
