Gail set it up so that this morning, arriving on base at the flight line of the military airfield, we could meet the working falcons.

So, rather than having to repair countless jet engines after sucking rabbits, ducks and smaller birds into them, the military has a falconry unit and a ferret division; the ferrets chase the rabbits and mice out of their holes for the falcons to kill, and the falcons catch or scare away anything in the sky.. This morning we got to meet two peregrines and a gyrfalcon, and I got to hold one with a glove, even with his hood off. When Gene was holding the gyrfalcon she was pretty impatient; she knew that when they were taken out of the car and held, it was time to hunt, and she kept making surprisingly friendly and eager ducklike noises. The peregrine I held just stared at me and cocked his head every way you can think of; his eyes were huge and dark, before his hood had to go back on. The soldiers who showed them to us were kind and told us all about them, and when it became obvious how interested I was, told us how to go about finding a job in falconry.

I could do that.

I think we're going to Nancy this afternoon, to the beloved Daum factory where the unsurpassed pate de verre is made.
