Though we only took it on the way up, the sign "Fussweg zur Burg" was a constant plague upon my diction pedagogy skills, from all three of the smaller Wurmstein kids. Wendy, as the youngest, was the most successful, but Michael was obnoxiously persistent for how much effort it took for him to pronounce it properly.

We left the sprawling metropolis of Mackenbach for the other sprawling metropolis of Landstuhl (land chair!) to see Burg Nanstein. It's beautifully decrepit and adorable; the link with the hilarious babelfish translation describes it better than I ever could. My castle must include rondel towers, a sod courtyard on the roof, an echo chamber (I sang Fraoch a Ronaigh because I couldn't think of any good and echoey German songs), a multitude of random and asymmetrical staircases that go the same place, a rampart, and a well.

I took many, many pictures. I also tried to draw it from the front grounds. I think I was marginally successful, though I had to compress a few proportions to fit it on the page of my sketchbook.
