Well.

This weekend, it was Video Games Live. And a bunch of other stuff. But I always love doing that show, and it went moderately well on Friday, probably due to the basically all-day rehearsals. Andrew apparently showed up at our house while we were downtown, but we were busy singing Fithos! Lusec! Wecos! Vinosec! And other things. I had no idea the Castlevania music was so awesome, and Street Fighter sounds surprisingly good orchestrated. I just really love Chrono Trigger, though. Time's Scar still rocks.

Between the orchestra rehearsal and the performance, we had a couple hours to spare, and Joodles had texted to see if I wanted to hang, so we met him for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe across the street from Jones Hall. It was actually quite a lovely dinner; I'm not sure I'd ever eaten at Hard Rock Cafe before, but that burger was both delicious and huge. And the waiter was very interested in hearing about the VGL shows. And Joodles was Joodles. I always wish I had seen more of him, after we hang out. Especially since he's leaving.

Saturday, I finally managed to get Joodles to play a little bit. Not much, but enough that I am not devastated he's gone and I'm gone and by the time I get back he'll be in New York. We went to see Much Ado in the afternoon (my third time, and I'D SEE IT AGAIN, YOU GUYS IT'S AMAZING), and then he skived off to pack for his departure that evening.

Yesterday, after my last go at church for the season, Dan and I went to see the Generations production of Sweeney Todd. I'm always skeptical when anybody with limited resources tries to put on that show (that's why I laughed when the North Colleges said they were going to do it). It's so hard, both musically and dramatically, and there is so much that it's so easy to get wrong. But it was an adequate production, with some standouts and some flaws, and the music was all entirely excellently learned, and for the most part excellently performed. The Mrs. Lovett carried the show; her Catherine Tate impression was perfect as an interpretation of the character, and her accent was pretty damn flawless (both sung and spoken), which was not the case for anyone else in the cast. In fact, when the show started and I realized they were going to try for accents, I cringed, because that can ruin a show, but Mrs. Lovett's excellence generally distracted from anybody else's inability to imitate either RP or some vaguely lower-class accent. Their Sweeney, in contrast, had an excellent East London working-class accent while speaking, which he entirely dropped while singing (but I am fine with that, as that's pretty much what Hearn did and I certainly can't criticize Hearn's performance). His emotional extremes were extremely compelling, but Dan pointed out that the middle was a little flat; I didn't notice. I may have been hypnotized by his enchanting baritone range: the super-low bits got a little iffy sometimes, but it sounded like a razor on velvet (ha ha) right down to the bottom of the staff. I was particularly enamored of his rendition of the Johanna reprise. And he did a great upset scream and physical reaction. right off the bat, he choked Mrs. Lovett up against a wall when she recognized him, and right at the end, his devastation over Lucy was captivating.

Man, I love that show.

Over the weekend, we also got the tickets. We leave Wednesday morning. It is going to be great. Scotland first, likely, then THE WORLD. Or the rest of the UK and then a drive to Germany.

Oh man, here it comes.
