The rehearsal dragged a bit, but the time it took to get from there to home to downtown for the thing was actually quite impressive, and we didn't run any red lights.

There was this deal for members of the chorus to get a ciscount on tonight's Symphony concert if they agreed to be in a commercial for the Symphony, and be there at 5:45 instead of 8. So we did. It was fun... choir exercise: sit down, stand up, switch places, sit down... Our task was to personify their catch-phrase "Escape to the Symphony", by looking like we were enjoying ourselves, reacting to the "music" (he played some on a tape a couple times, but it was mostly pretend) with our partners and clapping at the end, then standing ovation. They had to film it no fewer than 22 times in 4 different arrangements of people, in order to get the right amount of angles and such. It was fun, though. It'll be about ten seconds long in the commercial. They were using 18 or so people all bunched together in the hall in order to make it look like a full house, so they couldn't have everybody sitting the same way every time...

The concert, which started at 8, was all Gershwin. Before intermission were a couple of overtures and stuff from Porgy and Bess. And afterwards... Ah, I love pianists. They rule. American in Paris was first, then Rhapsody in Blue. You have no idea how happy that made me. Scott Holshauser, the principal keyboardist of the Houston Symphony, played the piano. I love pianists, especially that one. He accompanies the rehearsals for Symphony Chorus, unless he has a gig. And if he has a gig, the rehearsal is worthless. Nobody can replace him. He is so THERE. He can read the director's mind, play exactly what we need, and the whole orchestra part at the same time as our parts, while especially emphasizing parts we've had trouble with.. He's as good as Tom. That's frightening. He's different, but I actually think he's comparable. If they ever got together and did a four-hands piece, we'd all be in trouble.

Reminds me, I forgot to rhapsodize about the concert last night. Chichester Psalms are COOL. You people all should have come. There were six percussionists. Bernstein rules. Another jazz great. You know what he said? "It's all jazz."›
