That went pretty well. I got my panicking done and out of the way last night, so I just talked the ears off a bunch of Chamber Choir donors about what I learned in grad school about improvisation, with the occasional demonstration of principles or subjects I was explaining, and I didn't even get through a third of the stuff I'd come up with to tell them about before I decided I should stop hogging the floor and let Paul do some stuff. He did a spiel about jazz, since that's the idiom he works in, and people threw him some notes and he made stuff out of them, and we both fielded several interesting questions, and then we did two of his pieces at the end. Everybody seemed impressed, and some of them were very effusive about it. Success! Also the host made some amazing hors d'oeuvres that I got to eat after we were done. And Sonja and her husband came, so there were some familiar and affectionate faces in the sea of people-I-had-to-impress. Heh.
It's hard to demonstrate what kind of improvisation I am most comfortable with, since it requires either informed collaborators or a recording device. I did what I could about monophonic vocal improv, and a couple things with Paul's help, and people are talking about maybe a Next Time, so maybe then people will know what multitracking choral improv sounds like.
