Work has started to interfere with my life. Well, we knew this would happen.
I've contemplated taking a Rice class, now that I get a free one per semester. I'm thinking probably German, since that's at the highest intersection of convenient and useful. However, I suspect I'll want to audit, since it's in the middle of the day and maybe I'll need to miss some. But I'm looking forward to being not quite so sadly monolingual again.
First Chamber Choir rehearsal of the season was last night. It's going to be a very Russian concert, including some greats and some unknowns that are obscure for a reason (Bob sure knows how to pick them). Though the concert title is "Soul Music", which differentiates the program from the normal choral sacred oeuvre I'm not sure how, we are doing the Gorecki Totus Tuus I've loved from the King's Singers recording since Capella came out, and the Pärt Bogoroditsye Dyevo which I've loved from the King's Singers recording since Christmas came out. Also a Tavener I didn't know, and I like it. The selections from the Tchaik vespers, though, I was expecting greatness and was underwhelmed. I guess it's hard to live up to the Rach, with that perfect balance of austere liturgical homophonic chant and lush expressivity.
Tonight, in contrast, was Brahms Requiem and Nänie with the symphony chorus. I am vocally overtired. I suspect my technique has deteriorated since my last lesson, what, threeish years ago? I also considered joining a vocal studio at Rice, maybe Kathy's, but turns out staff benefits don't allow you to take individual-instruction classes. Maybe I'll ask Tom for a coaching sometime. He's busier than a whole hive of bees, but he knows me pretty well and nobody's better for helping you get out of your own way.
