Anthony's methodology class yesterday went on a field trip to the Firestone listening room, which was a little bit of a squeeze, but it has the only all-region DVD player, and we were watching Beckett's Not I as filmed in German by some famous director in collaboration with the author. Just a mouth on screen, having its Beckettian fit (part 1, part 2). It was undeniably powerful, but I find myself much more interested in analyzing it dramatically than musically, despite its relevance to our module relating speech to song. Anyway, it's both hard to watch and hard to look away from, in the manner of all good train wrecks. We watched it, listened to the entirety of a Schubert string quartet movement (and it's developed my much the same kind of repetition), watched it again, and listened to the Webern concerto. That was a brain-tiring class.
And then I sang Brahms with Olivia for Ran. He was absolutely thrilled. I don't even know. Whatever. I'm glad. It went well, he thanked us for being punctual (we arrived right before 7), and after we played it an he expressed his enthusiasm, we were done and went home.
Today was spent procrastinating (but not homework! Did that yesterday) till I went to meet David Schockett at school to see what we could do for the World Music ensemble project. Probably combining a Balkan piece off an album he likes with a Bulgarian one I like. We'll transcribe them and see how they go together.
AND THEN. I found a room so the sax player who was in the room with drums, amps, and piano would leave. And then spent two hours playing my own songs with Andy and Simon. Pianists has an arc now, and I'm going to incorporate more of the Rach into it. Simon and I taught Andy how What I Wouldn't Do For You goes, and we're killing it. We found something to do with the middle of Promising Mediocrity. And we ran through the two CK covers for giggles, which is when Tony walked by and heard, so he got to come in and see the end of the rehearsal. MAN I LOVE DOING THAT STUFF.
Tomorrow morning is more songwriting, and I've done my Ear Training homework so I don't even have that to worry about. PT appointment, too, after class, which is always nice for ankle massage. It has been a good week. If I could get to North Hero, VT and back on Saturday for Crown Tourney, it'd be beyond belief.
