Thursdays I inevitably feel like my education is having at least some effect. It's reassuring, even as it's frustrating. I got excellent feedback and suggestions for ways to continue with a couple song fragments I presented in the ensemble in the morning, introduced the entire class to the fact that there exist novel-length HP fanfiction that is frequently better than JKR's writing and gave my fanfiction spiel. I nailed 8 bars of off-the-cuff swing solo over the changes for All of Me in ear training, only to discover the next 8 bars I tried were completely unidiomatic (apparently people didn't do quarter-note triplets in the swing era). And then I got a note wrong in the harmonic dictation I so blithely put on the board when Hankus asked for volunteers.

While I'm recounting the embarrassments of the week, let me mention that I chatted up the cashier lady and her bag boy colleagues at the grocery store this evening and nearly forgot to pay; they had to call me back. Then I forgot to get the receipt, and they called me back for that.

Meanwhile, back in yesterday, I went to the PT lady and she ultrasounded my ankle (I think it was therapeutic; there were no pictures) and massaged it and said I needed a bigger compression sleeve, cause I might get a skin ulcer if this one kept squishing creases in my instep. Ok. I went to the CVS next door and got a bigger one. I also splurged and got a box of foodless candy bars with no nutritional value, and ate them all yesterday evening. I forgot how they sort of rearrange all the contents of one's digestive system. Foodless food substitutes tend to do that. I just bought a lot of sugar-free pudding at the grocery store. Let's see how many I eat this evening. I also made stew and couldn't resist eating a lot of the seared beef before I put it in there, so I'm not actually hungry... But pudding tastes like sugar. Yes.

Continuing the apparently nonlinear chronology of this post, this morning in Ted's ensemble we sort of finished writing/arranging Simon's song and played it all the way through. It's much catchier than Yasmine's, which we started learning today, but Yasmine's has spaces where I get to moan and wail in time and on pitch above an irregular but consistent set of changing meters. Should be fun.

Really, all the writing is to disguise the fact that after class and a ten-minute runthrough of the Brahms with Olivia, I went straight home and proceeded to accomplish absolutely nothing. I reread [personal profile] sam_storyteller's Cartographer's Craft and finished the 4th Rawn book in the series about sunrunners and royalty, and started the next one. I watched an awful lot of TV I hadn't had a chance to during the week. Brent called and wanted me to make him a burger (well, he asked if I wanted one, which means do I want to make one out of his food supply and make him one too). I had PLANS. I went to the Store. Look how well that turned out. Well, I have stew. Also we watched more TV from earlier this week. It's okay, now I have amazing stew that will probably last two weeks, and the thing about foodless vegetables is that they're regular vegetables like celery and kale and onions and parsley, and they cost almost nothing. The entire grocery trip cost under $30, and half of that was pudding.

Of which I have doubtless eaten too much. But the peel-off foil seal on these cherry jello cups have weird little happiness-related mottoes, and I am keeping this one: "Happy is still legal in all 50 states". Way to make political statements, jello.
