Sigh. Post-holiday letdown. Though tomorrow night will be fun, all the cousins were gone yesterday. Since I am now slightly less incapable of driving than I was (though you wouldn't know by my trip with Allen and Charlotte to Wal-Mart for cream, Taboo, and DVDs), I can entertain thoughts of road trips to see them between holidays. Because I miss them.
The was much playing of cards and board games and Taboo while the Glasers were still here. It took me awhile to be able to interact with the new fathers Paul and Kevin without having to run away and burst into tears; their interaction with their kids reminded me severely of the few memories I have of my own father. However, I discovered that they're still the same people I liked before. Paul will hold forth amiably for hours on any subject he has knowledge of, and his brother Kevin is the slightly sharp-edged, defensive kind of friendly that comes with an overabundance of good looks. Their wives are growing on me. Allen's still the same genial, laid-back, story-telling, depressingly normal kid he's been. He lost his license, so Kevin's been trying not to let him drive much on their trip. But he's still got a job bartending at a casino, and is actually considering going to school. Kevin's at the same job, and they pay for his school, so he went back.
Grant, Kevin, Allen and I were the last set of cousins left, and conveniently enough, they're my favorites of the ones who were here. David and Andy got the guns out and (with the requisite horror safety stories before letting us touch them) taught us (me) how to shoot. We set a few empty Dr. Pepper cans on a log at the end of the yard before the bayou. I wasn't terrible, I think; better with David's gun (Grandfather's) than Andy's. I like the cocking; the semiautomatic takes the fun out of it. We reset the targets and put one of the Dr. Pepper cans high on a stick, and went on the roof to lie down like snipers. Better for me; I had to either sit down and aim over a chair, or lie down on the roof, my aim was that shaky because the gun was heavy. But on the roof, I was the one who hit the can on a stick.
Anyway. Kevin, Allen and Grant (with Jill) all left the same night, after bringing me with them on the required Whataburger trip (there are no Whataburgers in Missouri, so they always go before they leave Texas). Grant brought me back to Grandjo's house and left from there. It was sad to just have Mama, Andy, David and Grandjo in the house. But Andy's fixing my old Bose speakers (reminds me; must post Christmas loot list), and we watched several movies in the days following the cousin exodus, with various combinations of speakers on laptops trying for surround sound. :)
I dunno how much longer I'll be here. School starts on the 11th. If I don't catch you before you leave town, consider yourself wished a happy Yule and Christmas and New Year and everything; I'll mail you your presents.
